Digital Painting, Am Yisroel Chai
Our shuls in America don’t yet match those of pre-war Europe in beauty, size, and history, but none of that seems to matter to those who hate us. And perhaps that is one lesson to take from those who would shoot us down. A shul is a shul is a shul, whether it is Conservative, Orthodox, Chabad, in Pittsburgh, California, or in the heart of the holy city of Jerusalem, and a Jew is a Jew is a Jew is a Jew, whether she lights Shabbat candles on Friday night, or settles down to watch TV, whether he wears a kippah, goes bareheaded, or sweats under a heavy fur streimel. We may persist in seeing ourselves as parts of different groups, yet we are part of one whole and that whole will survive and thrive as our ancestors have done and we will continue to do. With a little bit of light from each of us, we form a beacon that not only pushes away the darkness, but overpowers it completely.
